Main Draw8 MonradNigel Rowe bt John Peirce3-1 (7/9, 9/4, 9/3, 9/3)Details

A reduced entrance number from last year saw 8 players compete this year’s event hosted at the Wessex Squash Club. Due to the reduced entry field we concluded the event in the one day and we played the Monrad system with everyone playing for their final position.

The seeding’s were taken from previous competitions and league. There was one “dark horse” John Sumner who no-one had come across before.

1st Round:

So the first round matches were between:

  • Nigel Rowe vs John Sumner 3-0 9/7, 10/8, 10/8
  • John Peirce vs Clive Morgan 3-0 9/5, 9/3, 9/0
  • Mike Stannard vs Neil Marshman 2-3 3/9, 5/9, 9/2, 9/2 7/9
  • Russ Bothwick vs Mike Hyland 2-3 6/9, 9/4, 5/9, 9/4 7/9
Nigel was playing the long game trying to get the feel of the courts and John the new face was chasing down everything.
John did not have the control and had to go all out to keep Clive at bay, who did not give up at any stage of the match.
Mike looked shell shocked by Neils continued hard hitting and in fairness Neil from the front of the court was deadly, a call to arms saw a tight 5th with Neil taking the win.
Russ and Mike had a see-saw of a match with no player being able to dominate. It was Mikes determination that saw him through that match.

2nd Round:
  • Nigel Rowe vs Mike Hyland 3-0 9/4, 9/2, 10/8
  • John Peirce vs Neil Marshman 3-0 9/0, 9/2, 9/2
  • John Sumner vs Russ Bothwick 3-1 7/9, 9/1, 9/3, 9/1
  • Clive Morgan vs Mike Stannard 3-2 1/9, 9/6, 5/9, 9/4, 9/7
Mike was a little disappointed to not sneak a game and played well against a strong opponent.
Neil who having come through his first match as “his final” was spent for this match and John finished it early.
Russ after taking the first realised how dogged and tricky an opponent John S was and couldn’t get to grips in the next 3.
Mike was out to get this monies worth and settled for another 5 setter with the 5th really not won till the last point.
  • 7-8 Play-off. Mike Stannard vs Russ Bothwick 3-2 5/9, 6/9 4/9, 5/9 6/9

Whats this Mike tired after playing 10 games and going 2-0 down!!!! No way, pulling on reserves even the Arab oil states would be proud of he came back to win 3-2.

  • 5-6 Play-off. John Sumner vs Clive Morgan 3-2 5/9, 9/5 9/3, 5/9 9/2

Another epic battle for the old stalwart saw a match that didn’t have any short rallies in it with both giving their all. John just having the legs on Clive.

  • 3-4 Play-off. Mike Hyland vs Neil Marshman 3-1 ( the only missing score sheet!!!!)

Well a fiery contest at times with Mike sensing a lofty finish after only deciding to enter at the last minute. Neil managed to pull a game back but Mikes court and match presence saw out the game.

  • Final. Nigel Rowe vs John Peirce 3-1 7-9, 9/4, 9/4, 9/3

A repeat of last years final at least saw some improvement with John actually sneaking a game. Nigels precision and match awareness is something that many players could learn from. With a minimal amount of mistakes Nigel kept up a constant pace and pressure on John and it showed after the first game with a regular gap between himself and John in the last 3 games.

A worthy winner and could go on to make it 3 in a Rowe!!!!!!!!

Many thanks to all who played for making it such an enjoyable and easy event to put on.

Thanks to the Wessex for letting us have the event at the club.
